DASPA · Claiming from AustralianSuper

Super with AustralianSuper? Take it with you.

Australia’s biggest fund holds an enormous amount of backpacker and student super. Here is how a DASP claim on an AustralianSuper account actually runs, and the one step that stalls most of them.

Yes. If you worked in Australia on a temporary visa and your super sits with AustralianSuper, you can claim the full balance as a Departing Australia Superannuation Payment once you have left and your visa has expired or been cancelled. The application reaches the fund through the ATO’s DASP system, AustralianSuper says it processes a complete application within 10 to 14 business days of receiving it from the ATO, and the legislated tax is 65% for working holiday makers or 35% on the taxed element for other temporary visas.

Why so much traveller super ends up in AustralianSuper

AustralianSuper is the country’s largest super fund, with more than 3.5 million members, and a huge number of employers use it as their default. If you never picked a fund when you filled in your new-starter paperwork, the cafe, warehouse or office that hired you very likely opened an AustralianSuper account in your name and paid your 12% into it without you ever seeing a login. Many travellers only discover the account exists when we find it.

The flip side: if you worked more than one job, the odds that all your super is in AustralianSuper are low. A second employer with a different default fund means a second account. Our search covers every fund in your name plus anything already at the ATO, and one flat fee covers the lot.

How a claim reaches the fund

AustralianSuper points applicants to the ATO’s online DASP system, and that is the route that works: the ATO confirms your identity and immigration status with Home Affairs, then passes the application to the fund for payment. There is also a paper route using form NAT 7204, mostly useful in edge cases. We prepare and lodge through the registered-agent channel, watch for the fund’s document requests, and chase the claim until the money moves. The payment always goes from the fund directly to your bank account, in Australia or overseas. We never touch it.

The $5,000 passport step

Here is where AustralianSuper claims stall. If your balance with the fund is $5,000 or more, AustralianSuper asks for a certified copy of your passport, certified within the last six months, before it will pay, and it asks after the application has already arrived from the ATO. An applicant who has left the country, does not check the email, or gets the certification subtly wrong sits in limbo: the application is lodged, but the clock on payment never starts. Managing exactly this step, finding you a valid certifier where you now live and checking the copy before it goes in, is part of what the fee buys.

Already left more than six months ago?

Once you have been gone six months with an expired visa, funds are required to transfer your balance to the ATO as unclaimed super. It is still fully claimable with no deadline, but ATO-held super is taxed at 65% whichever visa you held, so the balance may no longer be with AustralianSuper at all. Locating it, wherever it now sits, is part of the service, not an extra.

How the claim works with us

Everything runs from your phone: the 5-minute form, payment of the flat $150, and our passport-and-selfie identity check powered by Stripe Identity. If AustralianSuper asks for its certified passport copy on top, we guide you through getting a valid certification where you are and check it before submission. We lodge with the ATO and every fund you turn out to have, and a complete application is typically paid within 28 days. Want the number first? Run your balance through the DASP tax calculator, or see what actually starts and stops the clock.

Common questions

Is DASPA part of AustralianSuper?

No. We are an independent lodgement service run by a registered tax agent (26076969, verifiable on the TPB public register), and we are not affiliated with or endorsed by AustralianSuper. You can always apply yourself for free through the ATO’s online DASP system. People hire us to find every account they hold, not just this one, to handle the fund’s document requests, and to chase the claim until it pays.

My balance is over $5,000 and I have already left. Who certifies my passport?

AustralianSuper asks for a certified copy of your passport for balances of $5,000 or more, and the certification must be recent, dated within the last six months. Who may certify depends on where you are, commonly a notary public or Australian consular staff, and a wrong certifier, stale date or missing wording is the usual reason these applications bounce. We check yours against the fund’s current requirements before anything is submitted.

I think I have other funds besides AustralianSuper. Does that cost more?

No. The fee is a flat $150 however many funds you turn out to have. We search for every account in your name, including super already transferred to the ATO, and one claim covers the lot. If we recover nothing, the fee is refunded in full.

How long does AustralianSuper take to pay a DASP?

The fund says it processes a complete application within 10 to 14 business days of receiving it from the ATO, inside the 28-day standard that applies across the industry. The clock only starts when the application is complete, which is why the certified-passport step matters: an application waiting on documents is not being processed at all.
