You apply for a DASP (Departing Australia Superannuation Payment) online — there is no paper form for standard claims. There are two ways: the ATO's free DASP online application system, or a registered tax agent who prepares and lodges the application for you — finding every fund and any ATO-held super along the way. Either way you'll need your passport, your visa details, and the bank account you want paid; complete applications are typically paid within 28 days.
What you need before you start
- Passport — the one you travelled to Australia on (plus your current one, if renewed since)
- Visa details — the subclass you held (417, 462, 482, 500…), and confirmation it has expired or been cancelled (not sure? that's checkable — we do it on every claim)
- Departure date — approximate is fine
- Bank account — Australian, or international with your bank's SWIFT/BIC code
- Optional but valuable: your TFN (finds every account reliably) and any super fund names or member numbers you have
Option 1 — apply through DASPA (the 5-minute version)
Our online application takes about five minutes, and "I don't know my fund" is an accepted answer — locating every account in your name, including super already transferred to the ATO, is the core of the service. You verify your identity with your passport and a selfie (no certified copies, no notaries), a registered tax agent (TPB 26076969) reviews and lodges everything, and we chase whatever needs chasing until the money lands. Flat $149 + GST, refunded in full if we can't recover any super.

Option 2 — the ATO's free DASP online application system
The ATO runs a free system at ato.gov.au and if your affairs are simple — one fund you can name, tidy paperwork, balance under $5,000 — it works well and costs nothing. Be ready to: identify each super fund and account yourself, deal with each fund's own requirements (funds commonly want certified identity documents for balances over $5,000 on DIY claims, which from overseas means a notary), and resolve any rejections through the ATO phone queue on Australian hours. The tax outcome is identical whichever path you choose — DASP tax rates are set by legislation.
Which option fits you?
| Your situation | Best fit |
|---|---|
| One known fund, balance under ~$1,000, documents tidy | ATO free system — our fee isn't worth it for you |
| Multiple jobs, funds unknown, or gone 6+ months (ATO-held money likely) | DASPA — the all-accounts search is the point |
| Balance over $5,000 and you're overseas | DASPA — electronic ID verification instead of certified copies |
| DIY application stuck or rejected | DASPA — untangling these is bread-and-butter agent work |

Application questions, answered straight
Is there a DASP paper form or PDF?
Not anymore for standard claims — the DASP application is online only, whether you use the ATO system or an agent. A handful of funds still have their own paper forms for unusual cases (very old accounts, some defined-benefit schemes); if yours is one of them, an agent handles that paperwork as part of the lodgement.
Can I start my DASP application before I leave Australia?
Yes — and you should. You can prepare the application while you are still in Australia; it simply cannot be finalised and paid until you have departed and your visa has expired or been cancelled. Completing our form before you fly means we lodge the moment you are eligible.
Is there a login for the DASP online application?
The ATO system does not give you an account or password — you re-enter your passport and visa details each session, and unfinished applications can be resumed within the system using your details. If you applied with DASPA, there is nothing to log into: we send you email updates at every milestone and you can message us on WhatsApp any time.
How long does a DASP application take to process?
The application itself takes about 5 minutes with us (or 15–30 minutes DIY if you know all your fund details). Once lodged, the ATO and your funds typically pay within 28 days of a complete application.
Do I need my TFN to apply?
No — it is optional. Providing it makes finding every account in your name (including ATO-held super) far more reliable, which is why our form asks for it, but claims can proceed without it.
What happens if my DASP application is rejected?
The usual culprits are name mismatches (marriage, transliteration), passport renewals, visa data that does not line up, or a fund wanting certified documents. DIY applicants have to untangle this with each fund from overseas; fixing rejected and stuck applications is standard registered-agent work and included in our flat fee.
