DASP tax calculator: what actually lands in your bank

A full superannuation refund calculator for every visa type — fund-held or ATO-held, with the legislated DASP tax rates applied properly, plus a balance estimator if you have no idea what your super is worth.

How much of my Australian super will I get back? After DASP tax, working holiday makers (417/462) keep 35% of their balance, and most other temporary visa holders (482, student 500) keep 65% of the taxed element — but only while the super is still with the fund. Once it transfers to the ATO as unclaimed money (about six months after you leave), the tax is 65% for everyone. The calculators below apply the current rates for you.

2 · No idea what your balance is? Estimate it

Employers had to pay super on top of your wage — this works out roughly how much, from what you earned.

$
Estimated super earned$5,063

Assumes your employers paid correctly (most do; some don't — we check what's actually in your name on every claim). Fund fees and investment returns will move the real figure a little either way.

3 · The 6-month deadline checker

Funds must hand unclaimed balances to the ATO roughly six months after you leave and your visa ends — and ATO-held super is taxed at 65% for everyone.

The DASP tax rates, in one table

The rates are set by legislation and withheld automatically by your fund or the ATO when the DASP is paid — no agent, including us, can change them. What you can control: claiming before the ATO transfer (the single biggest lever if you were on a 482 or student visa — see the deadline checker above), and making sure every account is found so nothing is left behind.

Worked examples

  • Backpacker, 417, $5,600 with one fund: 65% tax = $3,640 withheld → $1,960 paid, about $1,796 after our fee.
  • Nurse, 482, $20,000 with her fund: 35% tax = $7,000 withheld → $13,000 paid, about $12,836 after the fee. The same balance claimed after the ATO transfer: $7,000 paid — waiting costs her $6,000.
  • Student, 500, $2,400 across three part-time-job funds: 35% tax = $840 → $1,560 paid, about $1,396 after the one flat fee (it covers all three funds).

More detail for your visa

Each visa has its own quirks — second-year 417 fund sprawl, the 482 timing trap, student small-balance maths: Working Holiday 417 · Work & Holiday 462 · Skilled 482 · Student 500. Or check whether you can claim at all with the 60-second eligibility check.

Calculator questions

How much tax is taken out of a DASP?

65% for working holiday makers (417/462), 35% on the taxed element for other temporary visas, 45% on any untaxed element, and 65% on ATO-held unclaimed super regardless of visa. The calculator applies these automatically.

Why is the working holiday rate 65%?

Parliament set a special 65% DASP rate for working holiday makers from 1 July 2017. No agent can reduce it — anyone implying otherwise should be avoided. What you control is timing, and making sure every account is found.

How accurate is this?

It applies the current legislated rates to the balance you enter, treated as a taxed element — which is what nearly all employer-paid super is. Your fund calculates the exact components at payment time, so treat results as a close estimate, not a quote.

How do I find my real balance?

Your fund's app or last statement is the quickest way. Multiple jobs usually mean multiple funds, and money may already be at the ATO — finding every account in your name is part of every DASPA claim, included in the flat fee.

Does the calculator include your fee?

Yes, as a toggle — $149 + GST ($163.90), flat, refunded in full if we can't recover any super. Untick it to see the DIY numbers; the ATO's free system produces the same tax outcome.
